3 embodied practices to celebrate the summer solstice
remembering that we are nature
Dear Beloveds,
Summer Solstice Blessings!
The Summer Solstice is when the sun reaches its zenith and for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere we’ll experience the longest day.
It’s important to name, our Ancestors have been honoring the seasons for millennia.
Contrary to what dominant culture will have us believe, these practices aren’t exclusive to white folks.
However, many of us have been taught to fear nature, the same way we fear our bodies, the erotic and the unknown. Yet, honoring seasonal thresholds is an embodied practice integral to our healing. Doing so, reconnects us to the parts of ourselves, one another and the land that have been severed by capitalist-colonialism. It reconnects us to the part of us that is ungovernable.
It’s also a time for celebration! The Summer Solstice offers deep medicine to expand beyond our comfort zone around the themes of visibility, voice and worthiness. Can we allow ourselves to be seen? Can we allow ourselves to be held? Can we know we’re worthy simply because we are?
As we root into these truths, here are three potent yet simple practices to honor this time.
1. Connect with the Earth
Go outside and plant your bare feet onto the earth. A patch of grass or soil right outside your door will do. Or head to your local park. Name the land beneath your feet, take a breath and share words of gratitude.
2. Dance your prayers
What are your intentions for the next season and beyond? Write them down then put on a song that embodies the energy you seek to cultivate and dance your prayers. Want to amplify the energy, take this outside into nature.
3. Host a sacred summer celebration
Let your inner social butterfly indulge and host a sacred summer soiree. If your nervous system needs intimacy invite a friend or two. Ask everyone to bring their most decadent dish and their favorite poem and watch the festivities unfold!
I leave you with this…
“When we love the Earth, we are able to love ourselves more fully. I believe this.” – bell hooks
I hope this season is filled with love and miracles for you. And may we remember, that we too are nature. And like nature, let’s remain ungovernable.
